Pisa-Google-CIS team wins ERD short text challenge

The organizers of the Entity Recognition and Disambiguation (ERD) Challenge have announced the winners of the competition. The best team in the short-text / web-query category was SMAPH, the team of University of Pisa, Google and CIS.

ERD is a competition organized by Microsoft and Google to build a working system to recognize mentions of entities in a given text, disambiguate them and map them to the known entities in a knowledge base like Wikipedia. For example, "armstrong" in "armstrong moon landing" should be mapped to the Wikipedia page of Neil Armstrong, not to the Wikipedia page of Louis Armstrong.

The SMAPH team consists of Marco Cornolti and Paolo Ferragina (University of Pisa), Massimiliano Ciaramita (Google Research) and Stefan Rüd and Hinrich Schütze (University of Munich).
